Living and Working in New Zealand
Norhata Sanchez’s Experience

My husband and I have been together in Philippines for four years before we moved here to NZ. The hard life back home made us get serious about something we had always wanted to do: work and live overseas. We’ve been both living together from our family independently, so moving abroad didn’t seem so different to us. Our child Princess, was only 8 months old when my husband moved to NZ for the opportunity to work as a Dairy Farm Assistant. Two years later, we were reunited here in NZ through family visa. Presently, we are living here in Wairarapa Region, where my husband’s work is based.
We chose New Zealand because of the Dairy Farm Jobs are in demand which fortunately, my husband’s degree and experience in Agriculture specifically in Animal Science suits the qualifications needed to land a job here. Also, NZ has always been my dream country to visit because of the movie “Lord of the Rings”, I am a big fan. The people here are so friendly and the scenery is so green and beautiful.

Here in Wairarapa we are right by the rural area with neighboring farms, near the lake and ocean beach. A traffic jam is a rare thing here. It somewhat reminds me of our town in Bukidnon which has a lot in common with the laid back type of lifestyle but it is a lot colder here! We are living in a very simple and peaceful life here. We realized it is a great place for our daughter to grow up. They don’t care about brands, having the latest gadget, having a cool car, etc., and I worry about them less too. Sure, they have crimes here, but not on the same scale with violence that is so common in the Philippines.

We started from scratch here. We have to save hard to pay our loans in the Philippines and send money for our family. My husband works at the dairy farm, I work part time at the rest home as home assistant and casual housekeeping in the hotel. You will get jobs easily as long as you’re not too fussy. My job here is not matched with my skills but I am happy I am earning a lot and managed to work while attending the needs of my 4 year old daughter. When we are not working we spend quality family time, go fishing at the lake near our place, visit some local tourist destinations, attend some Filipino society gatherings and a lot more activities which we enjoy and makes us feel at home in a foreign place. You will have “a new life” by moving to a new country, but you will also have to change. It takes adapting, learning new systems, new laws, new foods, new standards of workplace behavior.

The quality of life we have has improved and it is priceless.
